Museum and Park Buffon at Montbard
A historic monument and "Maison des Illustres", the museum takes visitors on a journey through the history of science, from curiosity cabinets to the first museums, focusing on two personalities born in Montbard: George-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon and Louis Jean-Marie Daubenton. The temporary exhibition rooms reveal the artistic and scientific heritage of these two famous naturalists. Designed by Buffon in the 18th century, the park is closely linked to the history of the Château des Ducs de Bourgogne, on which it is built. The Tour de l'Aubespin - the highest tower-terrace in Burgundy -, the Tour Saint-Louis, the underground chambers and the ramparts are the most visible remains of the former fortress. Buffon's study is the historic heart of the park. It was here that the naturalist composed the 36 volumes of his Histoire Naturelle générale et particulière.
