The Familistère of Guise

In the middle of the 19th century, Jean-Baptiste André Godin, a former factory worker, built a housing estate with 2,000 inhabitants in Guise (Aisne), close to his cast-iron stove factory: Le Familistère.
This "social palace" is one of the most ambitious social experiments in the industrialised world. Le Familistère is a realised utopia that operated until 1968 as a cooperative association of capital and labour. The members of the association collectively owned the Familistère and its factory.
