Less than an hour from Paris and Versailles, in the heart of the Eure valley, Maintenon is a castle on a human scale, delicately nestled in a French garden designed by Le Nôtre. It opens onto the majestic remains of Vauban's aqueduct, the only civil work of the royal military engineer.
This castle, with its thousand-year-old history, belonged to Françoise d'Aubigné, the future Madame de Maintenon, who converted and enlarged it to accommodate King Louis XIV. Its architecture has undergone many changes since its origin in the 12th century and is marked by the personality and tastes of its successive owners.
The castle also offers visitors a splendid French garden, a real showcase for the castle. Faithful to the spirit of Le Nôtre, who designed the initial plans, the flowerbeds were rebuilt in 2013... an invitation to take a stroll along the banks of the Canal de l'Eure.
At the rear of the park, the majestic and titanic ruins of the Vauban aqueduct mark the singularity of the site.
